Urine doesn’t sit on top of a rug. It soaks through the pile into the cotton foundation and dries into crystallized salts. Those salts are hygroscopic — they pull moisture from the air — which is why a rug can seem fine for weeks, then announce itself the moment a Delray summer afternoon pushes the humidity up.

Surface treatments — sprays, powders, even a standard carpet cleaning — reach the pile but not the salts underneath. Mask the smell, and the next muggy day brings it back.

Can every stain and odor be removed?

No — and anyone who promises otherwise hasn’t seen your rug yet.

Odor responds very well to soaking, and most rugs come back smelling like wool again. Stains are less predictable: urine is acidic and can chemically alter dyes, especially if the accident sat for months. When a dye has already shifted, that’s permanent — cleaning removes the contamination, but it can’t un-dye the wool.

What should I do right after an accident?

Blot — don’t rub — with dry towels until nothing more transfers. Skip the store-bought foams on a wool or silk rug; some set the stain or bleach the dye. Then get the rug to us soon: fresh urine is dramatically easier to clear than salts that have had a season to crystallize.
